Phantom Thread : A fabulous feast of 1950’S Fashion

Darlings you know I love fashion and film. Therefore nothing delights me more than a movie that is at least partially about fashion. Hence " Phantom Thread " is a near perfect fashion film. This film is set in London in the 1950's , in the lost world of English couture. While fashion is wonderful couture is sublime....
All films rely on costume design to varying degrees. “Phantom Thread,” however, is a rare movie that's about the subject.
Therefore this film is a costume designers delight. Of course, a major treat for Mark Bridges, Oscar winning costume designer . Bridges has done the wardrobes for all of director Paul Thomas Anderson’s movies. Among them the disco porn business epic “Boogie Nights,” turn-of-the-last-century psycho oil baron drama “There Will Be Blood” and psychedelic era mystery “Inherent Vice.”
“It was a dream, yeah,” says Bridges, whose other credits include “Fifty Shades of Grey,” “8 Mile” and his Oscar-winning work for “The Artist.” “It combined working and creating characters with people like Daniel Day-Lewis and Vicky Krieps. Furthermore creating the visuals of an age gone by. Actually having the resources to create them pretty faithfully to how they were originally constructed. The combination between the emotional and the visual was like nothing else I’d ever worked on.”
PHANTOM THREADS; THE FILM
Set in the hothouse world of 1950's British high fashion, “Phantom Thread” stars Day-Lewis as couture dressmaker Reynolds Woodcock and Krieps as the young waitress, Alma, who becomes his muse and lover.
In my opinion the real star of this film is the wardrobe. Therefore to recreate the times it took massive research on the clothing of the period. Still even more research included pouring over the Victoria and Albert Museum’s fashion archives. Hence Bridges’ team created 50 unique, House of Woodcock garments inspired by the likes of Balenciaga and Hardy Amies.
PHANTOM THREAD ; HAUTE COUTURE IN THE 1950'S
Accordingly this time has been described by some as the golden age of couture. In fact the post war era is when fashion returned to opulence and glamour. Therefore the years of 1947 – the year Christian Dior introduced his New Look- and1957 the year Dior passed away.
During that era, French couturiers like Pierre Balmain, Jacques Fath and Cristobal Balenciaga dominated world fashion with their elegant and glamorous creations.
In London, new competition arrived from the likes of Norman Hartnell, Hardy Amies and Digby Morton.were synonymous with the glamour of the royal family and princesses Elizabeth and Margaret.
Young bloods like Hubert De Givenchy captured the eyes and heart of the young Audrey Hepburn. In the same way the rest of the world followed her.
By the end of the 1950s Coco Chanel after a few false starts after the war, was in the ascendant once again. In fact Chanel promoted a more consumer friendly women’s wardrobe. Ultimately this was to herald the end of the golden age of Haute couture.
The death of Dior in 1957 and the changing economic world, ended this era of opulence.Therefore the age that catered only to wealthy Hollywood stars and the social elite was over. Hence a surge in DIY and boutique fashions – especially from London, heralded a new age of street fashion.
PHANTOM THREAD : FASHION THAT LASTS TILL TODAY
While some of you may be lovers of vintage fashion , others may prefer vintage inspired garments . In fact the 1950's are credited with giving us the circle skirts and the sheath dress . Moreover these silhouettes are still very popular today. As a matter of fact the 1950's is one of my favorite fashion periods of the 20th century. Many of our best labels and designers today retain strong influences from the glamorous 1950's.
Moreover for me to further make my point I will show you some great 1950's inspired fashion . I am a huge follower and supporter of other fashion blogs and other fashion bloggers . Therefore I have found some great 1950's look's from some of my favorite fashion blogs.
