OUT AND ABOUT

Hello darling's, with this note here I am launching a new column on Dress The Part called    OUT AND ABOUT. I have made a conscience decision to change my life, Dress The Part is going through some changes also. In fact in the last six months I have started to attend local fashion shows, art shows and other cultural events. Therefore, you may see some changes, however, the same great posts that you love will still be here. In fact, this is an extension to the exciting fashion and arts communities that exist both locally ,nationally and internationally.

Therefore I encourage you all to sign-up to my newsletter and stay tuned for some exciting new posts on Dress The Part.

Several months ago I ventured into the local Vancouver Fashion scene , by covering Vancouver Fashion Week for this blog. In fact, my blog was launched 2015 and I written here about fashion since then. However, it was this leap into Vancouver Fashion Week that set me up to continue my venture into the fashion and arts scene in Vancouver.

Since, that time I have attended art openings , fashion shows, and cultural events, some that I have reported here. Furthermore, it is surprising to me as to how many events there are here in Vancouver. I am loving this new found self and meeting exciting, talented, and creative,  people. The best part is making so many new friendships.

VANCOUVER INTERNATIONAL FASHION FESTIVAL

On Sunday June 9th, I attended the Vancouver International Fashion Festival at The Vancouver Club. Since, I had been hearing about the event and the buzz was around town, I contacted David Chen the organizer. I was immediately responded to in the most professional and cordial way. Therefore I knew I was dealing with a class act.

Prior to attending this event I had read an interview with David Chen, by Marilyn R. Wilson, published on Marilyn's blog Olio (read this great interview before continuing ) . Thanks to my friend Marilyn for her insightful interview. What we learn from this interview is the profound motivation David Chen had to start this fashion event, and his desire to help young talent in modeling, performing and fashion design. The love and caring that created this event was certainly obvious on Sunday night.

We were treated to a kimono display, complete with Kabuki masks and dance performance. Furthermore, we also saw the creative work of Japanese floral art by Hikirau Seino Ganon, and heard the operatic talents of Junko Shimizu with Earl Mayuga.

FASHION VOICE BY OZIOMA AJIBE, gave us an incredible look into her designs and the use of African fabrics. I am thrilled by this presentation. While visiting the Fashion Voice website, I was intrigued by the designs and the designers story.

THE SHOW

VANCOUVER INTERNATIONAL FASHION FESTIVAL

I like to use this platform to promote and encourage young designers. Therefore I am excited to see a group of talented young designers from VCDA (Visual College of Art and Design). The photo's that follow are mine. What I love about new young designers is they are not afraid to take risks. Many of the designers presenting were doing a fashion show for the first time. Now that I know of these talented designers , I am excited to see where their fashion careers take them. Most of the young designers showing at VIFF are graduating and will be presenting their portfolio's. I encourage all my Vancouver readers to check out this fun evening and meet these designers.

OUT AND ABOUT

What I am most excited about is that, here is another opportunity for young designers, models, and performers to gain the experiences they need to be successful. A big thank-you goes out to David Chen and his team for creating a great evening . Furthermore, all who attend these events help in creating opportunities, scholarships and experiences for young creative people.

Certainly, it is often the arts that get short changed. Therefore, for us lovers of the arts we are often called on to do our part, and from what I am seeing we are eager to contribute. Moreover if you have a talent share it , if you have knowledge spread and if you have the energy participate. For all the readers who missed out on this great event, remember Vancouver International Fashion Festival will be back , keep in touch through their Face Book page .
