AY LELUM THE GOOD HOUSE OF DESIGN

I have been following and reviewing fashion brand Ay Lelum The Good House Of Design for several years. Therefore I am excited to write a review of Ay Lelum at NYFW. Ay Lelum, is a First Nations, Coast Salish family art/ fashion collective based in Nanaimo B.C.

Sisters Aunalee Boyd-Good and Sophia Seward Good are the force behind this exciting label. They work with their family members; mother, designer, artist Sandra Moorhouse-Good, father William Good master carver, artist, historian, and brother W. Joel Good carver and artist. Notably, they are creative and hard-working examples of artistic synergy.

The new Ay Lelum collection Stqeeye’ centers around a Nanaimo River-area First People’s creation story narrated by Aunalee and Sophia’s father William Good. The story is about two wolves shedding their fur and becoming the first man and woman. In the tradition of the Coast Salish people, Ay Lelum tells its story using strong visuals taken from carving, textile arts, and music.

THE COLLECTION

While I wasn't physically present for the Ay Lelum fashion show in New York, I was certainly there in spirit. Since the beginning of the Covid-19 pandemic, virtual fashion shows, remote viewing, and fashion films are becoming the new normal. However, they cannot replace the excitement of a live runway show.

Ay Lelum brought their Stqeeye’ collection to NYFW with their usual flair. Since I have seen several Ay Lelum shows, I am familiar with the brand and how they stage their runways. The strongest brands are recognizable at a glance. Ay Lelum's brand is strong, distinctive, and empowering. The importance of Ay Lelum's underlying message is one of culture, heritage, and inclusivity.

In past collections, Ay Lelum gave us a wide range of day, sportswear, and evening wear. This season Ay Lelum went all-in with evening wear. From the first silver-blue slinky gown to the last red statement dress with a hood, this show exudes beauty, artistry, and sophistication.

The powerful graphic designs created by the designers brother Joel Good are the thru line, connecting these graceful dresses as a collection. Flowing capes, regal simple silhouettes and bold colors all combine in a cultural explosion that invites the viewer to engage in this most fashionable  journey.
