VANCOUVER FASHION WEEK PREVIEW S/S 2022-DAY 1 OCT 22ND

VANCOUVER FASHION WEEK PREVIEW

Certainly my anticipation is growing as we welcome Vancouver Fashion Week (VFW) back to the live runway Oct 22-24. It seems like it has been a longtime since Vancouver's fashion community could view the live runway shows that have been a feature of Vancouver since 2001. VFW has not been idle during the Covid-19 pandemic presenting  season's of virtual and filmed Fashion Weeks. I was lucky enough to be present at one virtual presentations and covered all the over events. During this pandemic a new form of fashion expression has taken root the fashion film and digital presentation. While designers have produced fashion films/ digital presentations for a long time they have been given a new vitality during this pandemic. VFW will present a digital showcase as part of the opening days shows. Visit the VFW website to view these presentations, Friday October 22nd at 15:00.

 LIVE SHOWS

Since the list of designers presenting at VFW was issued I have been busy doing research on the designers presenting. I am always excited when I can see new talent on the runway. This season VFW has again searched the globe to bring us a diverse group of designers who offer a plethora of styles, ideas and  overall exciting fashion. Many themes will be reflected on the runway this season, however what is standing out is the effect of the pandemic on creativity, isolation and new beginnings. I have chosen three designers to watch for on opening night.

ARANKA JACOBA SCHEEPER

Aranka Jacoba Scheeper comes to the VFW runway from Denmark. In reading her bio I am excited by her ideas on gender, dealing with themes of  fluidity between the concept of  feminine and masculine. If any topic is current and of our times it is that of gender identity and gender constructs. I'm excited to see the work of this young Danish woman who is challenging existing ideas on gender.

Lone Flower’ is a collection that, with a look back, is inspired by being in lockdown. The collection honors the Danish Military Home Guard’s service, in containing the spreading of the virus during the pandemic, by using details and functions from military equipment and combining it with a relaxed fit from home-wear.

CRYSTAL DRESS

Crystal Kang comes to Vancouver Fashion Week with over 30 years of experience as a dress designer. While she has a following in Korea, Crystals desire is to position her label on the world stage. Since we all love a beautiful gown Crystal Dress is giving us exactly that. In fact her her sensibilities on evening and wedding wear bring a vision of elegance and refinement. Certainly, I love a well done dress and Crystal Dress promises to bring us something beautiful .

UNDEPENDANT

Undependant is a label that comes to the VFW runway from Japan. This new label started in 2019 is a unisex brand that is inspired by art and is focused on not being gender dependent. Moreover the  theme of gender is again being put on the runway. In fact I am excited by how many designers are confronting typical gender roles and challenging societies gender specific clothing. This brand has a sporty edge and seems to be ready to wow our audience.
