ARANKA JACOBA SCHEEPER

Aranka Jacoba Scheeper showed her collection entitled 'Lone Flower’ on the opening night of Vancouver Fashion Week S/S 22. This young Danish designer shows her first runway collection here in Vancouver, having just graduated with a bachelors degree in fashion from the Scandinavian Academy of Fashion.

"Lone Flower" was inspired by the lockdown and the response of the Danish military during the pandemic. Scheeper wanted to pay tribute to the the Danish militaries regulation and tracking of Covid 19.  Aranka presents a military inspired collection that is infused with her own sensibilities and aesthetics.

"I like the contrast I create on men's bodies. I am interested in making the difference between masculine and feminine more fluid", the designer told me. The idea of contrasting nonbinary clothing with the militaries image of hyper masculinity is unique and fresh. "My clothing is not made for the conservative traditional man. I am interested in letting the wearers personality shine through."

THE COLLECTION - LONE FLOWER

This collection opened with a military march. Young male models strode to the beat, in an array of clothing that emphasized exposed skin. The contradiction of the military hyper masculinity and the models was evident, in their slight builds and boyish good looks. The first look was the most militaristic in army green and set the tone for collection. The second look was a melding of military and floral and a personal favorite. An evolution followed with garments that were less traditional in color and design. Aranka diverged from the traditional Scandinavian aesthetic of minimalism and gave us details that included hand painted patterns and floral appliques. The overall effect was one leading the viewer into a fantastical world where masculine and feminine converged. There were several standout looks. The first was a baby blue harness top made out of a multitude of straps paired with hand painted mauve sweatpants. The second was a parachute jumpsuit. traditional in silhouette with flashes of floral.

In a brief interview , Aranka Jacoba Scheeper told me she had started designing womenswear, but found that she had an affinity for menswear design. In fact it is evident that she successfully created a nonbinary collection that pushes our often safe boundaries. Here is a young designer that has an exciting future.

IN CONCLUSION

I am always excited to see the range of designers and the themes they express. Possibly one of the more constant themes arising is the exploring of gender identity. As we move into the second decade of the 21st century these ideas are becoming more common and more widely accepted. In fact, I can't wait to see how far the new generation of young designers is willing to push the envelope.
