EDUARDO RAMOS @ VANCOUVER FASHION WEEK

One of the best things about covering fashion weeks is meeting and interviewing the designers. Covering Vancouver Fashion Week offers me the opportunity to engage with designers from all over the world. However, the most exciting is to follow the development of local designers. I was introduced to Eduardo Ramos and his work in 2019 when he showed his first collection as a student designer from La Salle College. Reviewing student designers is often about recognizing potential. Eduardo Ramos stood out at the time. I have followed this emerging talent since.

I sat down with the designer just after his recent VFW success. Ramos shared his story. Born to an entrepreneurial family in vibrant Mexico City, Ramos said, "I was always attracted to drawing. I'm not like other designers, who from a young age knew what they wanted to do, and drew dresses all the time, I just loved to draw and drew everything." In the following years, Ramos traveled, started a business, and eventually followed his brother to Vancouver. In Vancouver that after studying business, Ramos took a sewing class. " I always liked fashion. I have a desire to be doing something new and different, designing fashion seemed to fit. Developing a fashion brand allows me a variety of outlets, and it is constantly changing." Being a good designer involves many skills. One important one is having something to say. Ramos told me, " I like telling stories through my garments. All my collections are very personal. My desire is to express my passion for life with my designs."

With the support of VFW and its sister company Global Fashion Collective Eduardo Ramos has shown his work in Paris and recently in London. The night of his presentation at VFW, he was awarded the Nancy Mak Award for an emerging designer. Ramos has a strong work ethic, a creative mind, and superior skills, placing him on an upward trajectory.

Ramos's latest collection is entitled ‘Initia Nova’ translated from Spanish meaning new start. The symbol for Ramos's rebirth is the mythical Phoenix rising from the ashes. According to legend, each Phoenix lived for five hundred years, and only one lived at a time. Just before the time was up, the Phoenix would build a nest and set itself on fire. Then a new Phoenix would rise from the ashes.

The story comes from ancient times its tale of rebirth is timeless. Timelessness ties into the collection Ramos sent down the runway. Often fashion shows are overly concerned with trends; in Ramos's case, classic beauty with a contemporary, edgy flare is a better description. The color palette starts from the ashes with silvery smokie greys and black, adding vibrant orange and a fiery red. From start to finish, this show is progressive, and you can see the legendary bird rising and finally taking flight, each garment building on the next. Pieces vary from evening pants and bustiers to intricate skirts, coats, jackets, and dresses. Many of the looks are composed of several elements, they are refined and fitted. Nothing is out of place in this precise and polished collection.

Standout looks include a tangerine coat with leather and furry details echoing a 70s vibe. Elsewhere in the collection, a frothy silver mini dress that represents the ashes is sexy and fresh. The sensuality is amplified, with five red and black looks, some with bare shoulders, daring silhouettes, and giving us our glamour fix. Currently, most of the fashion is preoccupied with minimalism, but Eduardo Ramos continues to focus on detailed celebratory pieces that are unique, alluring, and sophisticated. I am excited to see where Eduardo Ramos takes us next.
