MY TAKE ON TRENDS FROM NYFW S/S 2024

THE TRENDS FROM NYFW S/S 2024

NYFW is the starting point for the fashion season. For us fashion lovers, this is the kick-off for a time of inspiration. The runway shows are where the fashionistas, fashion editors, and journalists get inspired for the coming season. The trends from NYFW S/S 2024 often have their starting point in previous seasons; it can take two or three seasons for a trend to fully take hold.

I've taken a couple of weeks since NYFW to take a good look at what came down the runway. Trends are a strange beast, hard to tame and even harder to feed. Gone are the days when fashion weeks dictated everything we wear. I find myself drawn to an overall style that plays throughout the season. What stood out from this season was a move toward classic style. Classics should be the backbone of any wardrobe, and the designer gods were in line with this move to wearable classics that can be styled with the latest trend.

TRENDS FROM NYFW S/S 2024

On the NYFW runways, brands focus on clean lines with some current touches, coordinated ( but updated) suiting, and wardrobe staples. The jacket is oversized, the trousers are wide and full of movement, and the exception is a return to the peddle pusher. Sheer fabrics are the softer touch this season, and black for summer is hot. Remember to add a touch of metallics, whether silver or gold. Stick to the classics and add in the following.

OVERSIZED SUITING

TRENDS FROM NYFW S/S 2024

Oversized suiting stood out for me and some great looks came from Coach, Khaite and Jason Wu. These designs showed loose fitting blazers with trousers that moved and flowed. The oversized suiting gave a throw back to the boy friend blazer from a few seasons ago. This trend is for anyone who wants to add effortless chicness to their wardrobe.

PEDDLE PUSHERS

TRENDS FROM NYFW S/S 2024

Calling back to the days of Audrey Hepburn in Roman Holiday, Peddle Pushers is a classic that you either love or hate. A soft cringe can be heard from the haters of this look ,which seems to make a return twice a decade. I love this classic look and the options it opens up, under a skirt, with ballet flats, or try a high heel.

SHEER DELIGHT

TRENDS FROM NYFW S/S 2024

I said in the opening that often trends build over seasons, and the sheer clothing trend is one. Sheer clothing has been seen in the last few seasons, and it's still hot for S/S 2024. Sheer came down the runway in bold statements with visible undergarments or hints of sheer added to a classic look. I've spotted sheer all over the runway, in every shape and form. I've chosen my favorite examples from the vast array of sheer. The looks I've found give inspiration for those who want to show as much or as little skin as you like.

BLACK FOR SUMMER

TRENDS FROM NYFW S/S 2024

Black for summer? Wearing black in the summer has certainly become a thing over the last few years. The runways of NYFW may never have seen so much black for S/S looks. For many brands, black has become a summer staple. While black is a chic look, make sure that the heat-absorbing hue is suitable for summer by opting for designs inflowing lightweight fabrics or natural materials like linen and cotton. Here are some of my choices from the runway.

METALLICS ARE BIG

TRENDS FROM NYFW S/S 2024

Whether it is the liquid gold from Ralph Lauren or the silvery fabulousness from Laquan Smith, metallics were hot on the NYFW runways. While Beyonce encouraged her fans who attended her Renaissance tour to don silver, metallics of all tones shone brightly for clothes and accessories for the coming season.

IN CONCLUSION

I'm working on my looks for the upcoming Vancouver Fashion Week, and I can't wait to incorporate elements of the latest trends into my wardrobe. While I may not be able to afford designer clothes straight off the runway, I believe that fashion shows are about inspiration.
Personal style counts, allowing us to express ourselves and feel confident in our skin. However, staying fashionable also means keeping an eye on the ever-evolving fashion world and incorporating its movements into our looks.
Being creative is critical when it comes to fashion. It's not just about following trends but rather interpreting them in a way that suits our individuality. Mixing and matching different pieces, experimenting with colors and textures, and adding unique accessories can elevate any outfit.
One of the best things about fashion weeks and trends is that you don't have to wait until next season to incorporate them into your ensembles. I hope to see many of you at VFW.
