 GRANDI'S ESSENTIAL COLOURS

Darling's, I can certainly say, I would not be the person I am today without crayola crayons. I was an isolated little gay boy who escaped through drawing princess dresses, and movies. Moreover, it was my extra large box of crayola crayons that helped me escape into a safe world of dresses and colour. Therefore, my heart skipped a beat when I read about Grandi's  Essential Colour.

WHO IS GRANDY CHU

The following is copied from Vancouver Fashion Week website, with their permission.

A celebrated humanist once put the ratio of passion-to-reason bestowed in man at 24-to-1. After graduating from business school, Grandy found this to be approximately the ratio of time she spent designing and making dresses, versus that spent searching for what her mother referred to as gainful employment.

After 4 years in the financial and consulting sectors, she realized that the most gainful part of her employment was saying farewell to the regimented 8-hour work day. For the next 2 years, she devoted her time to building on her passion of dressmaking and the art of traditional tailoring.

Grandy discovered that few other professions so beautifully combine her artistic and the analytical expertise.

In 2013, Grandy started making one dress a week, and launched ADressAWeek.com to blog about her journey. From there, her style and philosophy as a designer emerged, with special emphasis the beauty of timeless elegance, the bespoke tradition, and quality craftsmanship. All couture garments are locally hand-made, and tailored to the specific measurements and body type of each client.

Trained from a young age as a classical pianist, Grandy continues to be an avid musician, regularly performing and teaching music lessons.

And perhaps it is the early exposure to art and music history that leads her to draw much of her creative inspiration from the stories and history of great art.

She made her debut with Vancouver Fashion Week, with her autumn-winter collection of 2014.

Moreover, I reprinted this biography, because it tells Grandy's story better than I could. What I find so exciting was her dedication to making one dress a week, with this sort of drive and talent success is inevitable.

ESSENTIAL COLOURS

Certainly, the colour's of the rainbow inspire many to create. In this collection Grandi's inspiration is the simple pack of crayola crayons. The bright primary colors put power on the runway. Here the monochromatic outfits stood like bold pillars of color with the strong lines of this collection. This celery green dress has vibrancy, and elegance with a classic silhouette. Moreover, I love this pink dress that screams style, fit for who Grandy calls her "daring modern woman"

ESSENTIAL COLOURS

The close-fitting classic silhouettes in shimmering fabrics may suggest these garments are party clothes. However, this collections sophisticated chic client, can strut her stuff almost anywhere. Looking at this collection of expertly crafted and joyfully colour-saturated pencil skirts, and tops, jumpsuits and dresses, creates a collection of mix and match wardrobe staples.

ESSENTIAL COLORS

As we all look at the vast black vision that for many is fashion, it is so refreshing to see Grandi's creations. Surprisingly the only black on the runway were the high heels and trim. How refreshing for fashion lovers who have not yet committed to the cult of somber onyx.

Certainly, the rich crayon colors set Essential Colors platform, however the succinct silhouettes and exact construction gives the collection sophistication. In fact the clean uncluttered garments have feminine power. Strong classic lines are the backbone of this collection.

As an illustration of Grandi's strong lines, I love the close fitting skirt with red textured top, an example of soft and hard working together. The strong lines include a strapless teal dress that hugs the body and presents a classic silhouette, popular in the 1950's. While at the same time a 70's one sleeve white shimmering body hugging dress is as hot today as it might have been at Studio 54.

IN CONCLUSION

A great promotion for this collection was a replica of a crayola crayon box, with a crayon included. In fact, taking us to the source of inspiration allows the audience to feel included. The fabulous styling with frizzed out hair, large coloured sunglasses and party hats also felt like an invitation to enjoy.

The feeling I got from this collection along with the chic daring style, was one of joy and inclusiveness. The bright coloured outfits sang out of a passion for the strong woman of today. It's clear this woman claims her space, is confident and bold, not afraid of her sensuality, and out for fun. What a great compliment for a designer when you can say "I know your client."

Thanks to Vancouver Fashion Week for the chance to see and enjoy this collection and more. Please contact Atelier Grandi to shop this great collection.
