SEE THE INVASION OF THE 1960’S ON THE FASHION OF TODAY

THE 1960'S

In the first place I'm not shy to admit I love the 1960's fashion. However the decade that has the largest influence on my own designs is the 1970's. Certainly the past is at work in all the arts but even more so in fashion. In particular the the past is used to reference certain styles , and evolve the modern fashions of today. Therefore it is a rare thing to see an exact copy of a garment from the past, unless it is a costume. Hence what we do see is the influence, the essence and the significance of the past . Many designers are inspired by the fabulous fashion of the 1960's.

In fact on the catwalk and the streets the spirit ot the 196o's fashion is alive. It's important realize these references as a student of fashion or a fashion lover. For example we saw on the runway and the streets the rebirth of the white Go-Go boots of the 1960's. However that's not where the story of this decades real influence ends.

ONE OF THE MOST INFLUENTIAL DECADES THE 1960'S

In the manner of other great times of social change such as the Industrial revolution the 60's were the times of  huge change. Moreover the 1950's were issued in with the New Look by Dior , which set the tone for the post wars years. Hence fashion saw the structured hourglass silhouettes of the socially conservative 1950's . But no one was prepared for the changes of the 60's .  All of a sudden the hemlines rose and silhouettes loosened as the sexual revolution hit fashion with it's biggest changes of the century.

Furthermore with the mass introduction of television, trends started to be more universal. The first thing to remember was the 1950's were an uptight decade with pristine looks and controlled conventional fashion. Then the explosion of the 1960's where bright colors and the Mary Quant London look took over.  Moreover the mod style really made a lasting impression and everything about fashion was artful free and fun.

Since the 60's not a decade has past without paying reference to the shift sleeveless dresses . While the abstract and geometric patterns of the 60's have given us such great designs today. More the mod influences with outrageous sunglasses and brilliant colors as much at home today as they were 50 years ago !

The Babydoll Dress

THE 1960'S

Gone were sculpted styles of the 1950's.  While the sexual revolution started to take off so did the comfort of the liberated woman. Hence the dresses became loose around the waist and the length went shorter. The babydoll dress was a of rebellion for the young Mods who popularized this look . However this look is popular today.

Certainly designers like Pucci made psychedelic flares very popular. Certainly the design houses woke up and began designing pants for the sophisticated customers. Therefore flash forward to 2018 and see the 60's influence.

BLACK AND WHITE GEOMETRIC DRESSES

THE 1960'S

Certainly the 1960's didn't invent black and white , but they perfected it .  Not to mention that  it was not only black and white but geometry played a part. While mod geometric dresses were a big part of the 60's they are also apart of fashion in 2018.

PSYCHEDELIC FASHION

THE 1960'S

Darlings the late 60's saw the Psychedelic fashion . In fact this is a period often duplicated and every season some designer somewhere goes Psychedelic. Of course Pucci has been giving us these wild colorful patterns since the 60's and still does.  Together with brilliant colors , paisley patterns ,swirls and optical illusions Psychedelic is here to stay.

THE 1960'S

In conclusion my dears the 1960's have had the biggest influence on our fashion today than any other time. Moreover  fashion changes through social changes and historic events. The sexual revolution, the women's movement, and civil rights  all changed society and fashion. Since the momentous events of the 60's, fashion has been on a roller coaster. Probably the one constant has been our return to the beginning of the change the turbulent 1960's.

Therefore I have shown you some of the fashions of today influenced by the 6o's . In short enjoy the pieces I've chosen and shop these looks  and please leave a comment. I've also put on my teachers hat, so if you're interested in learning more about the fashions of the 1960's order this book.
